My take on the Gay Marriage debate can be described in Dr. Suess's Book, "The Sneetches". I'd like to put religious beliefs and notions of right and wrong aside. This analysis is from the political point of view.
Homosexuals are like the Sneetches without stars. The proponents of Gay Marriage are like Sylvester McMonkey McBean and have convinced many that homosexuals will be socially accepted and all will be equal and right if everyone has stars.
That is really the ultimate goal of Gay Rights--equal rights and equal social standing. That type of equality is absolutely a good thing, and much overdue.
But the solution is not to grant Marriage (branding Sneetches with stars). The heart of the problem is that every Sneetch, with or without stars, must realize they are essentially no different. The real solution to Gay Marriage is for everyone to realize that stars or not, we are all equal, we all have rights, and we all have a great capacity for contributing to society. The Homosexual Community needs to seek a title that is their own--not "Marriage."
If "Civil Union" now has a connotation of a compromise, let's make a new title. How about "Open Family" or "United Couple." Those may not be the most creative, but you get the idea.
